Digital Forensics is the process of uncovering and interpreting electronic data/evidence so that it can be used in proceedings in the court of law. The main objective of Digital Forensics are Acquire, Preserve, Validate and Analyse computer and related electronic media in such a manner that it aids investigation agencies to present them as evidence in the court of law. It helps Law and Enforcement to minimise and abate work by narrowing down list of suspects using Incident response and Triage techniques.

Following forensic procedures at crime scene which helps to ensure that the digital evidence obtained in a forensically sound manner which ensure reusability and validation of electronic evidence so that it is admissible in the court of law. Recovering deleted electronic records and deleted partitions from digital media when possible. Helps corporate bodies to identify a malicious attack on the digital infrastructure, and also allows you to estimate the potential impact of the malicious activity on the victim. Helps corporate bodies impeach employees who are performing unlawful activity like data theft and passing out insider information.

Preserving the evidence by following the chain of custody. The wide use of digital media to store data which is more economic and easy has made the use of paper and other physical media to store data negligible or only used when absolutely necessary.
